Obituary for Virgil Allen McKown

Virgil Allen McKown age 69 of Falls View passed away on Friday August 31, 2018 at Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Va. He was born February 16, 1949 in Ovapa, WV and was the son of the late Robey and Hazel Thompson McKown. He was also preceded in death by his sister Louetta Lewis and brother Stanley McKown.

After graduating from Montgomery High School, Virgil enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served in the 1st Marine, 1st Division, (Big Red One) in the Vietnam War from 1968-1969. He was awarded a Navy Achievement Medal from the Department of the Navy for Meritorious service. Following his military service Virgil hauled coal for 17 years then owned and operated a trucking company which leased trucks through Miller Transporters for 23 years.

Surviving is his wife of 48 years Betty Lynn (Maynor) McKown; daughter Kelly McKown-Smallwood and husband Anthony of Harrisonburg, VA; grandchildren Drew Allen McKown, Corinne, Alice, and Miriam Smallwood; sisters Shirley Welch and Wilma McKown of Powellton, WV, Janet Coleman of Mt. Carbon, WV, Marge Morrison of Chattanooga, TN, Jean Blake and husband Roger of London, WV and brother Randall McKown and wife Margie of Indian Trail, NC and also numerous nieces and nephews.

Service will be on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at 2:00 PM at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery with Rev. Joe Darlington officiating. Burial will military honors will follow in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens at Glasgow. Friends may call from 12:00 noon until time of service at the funeral home.
