Obituary for Freddie Adam Moses Davenport, Sr.

Freddie Adam Moses  Davenport, Sr.
Reverend Freddie Adam Moses Davenport, Sr. was born on January 9th, 1926, in Dante Virginia to the late Wade Samuel Davenport, Sr. and Ethel Lula Wise. After a long blessed life of 92 years he went home to be with the Lord on January 4th, 2018.He was preceded in death by his three sisters Alice Combs, Carrie Lee Saunders, and Florence Davenport; brother; Wade Samuel Davenport, Jr.; son; Wade Davenport, and daughter; Linda Davenport.

Freddie was an honorable pastor for 40 years, and served as a minster for 44 years of his life. He graduated from Seminary Extension Satellite with a diploma in "Theology”, and an advanced diploma in "Pastoral Ministry". In the community, Rev. Davenport served as the "1st Vice Moderator" of the Mt. Olivet Missionary Baptist Association, "Vice Moderator" of the New River Missionary Baptist Association, "Chairman" of the Ordination Committee, "Chairman" of the Churchmanship Committee, and "Treasurer" of the Minister's and Deacon's Union. In addition, Rev. Davenport served as "Trustee" of the West Virginia Baptist State Convention and as "Assisting & Counseling Minister" of the New River Missionary Baptist Association.Freddie was a true solder of God in serving as the pastor of two churches (First Baptist Church Smithers, and New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Whipple) in addition to ordaining many ministers until he left this life. He was a counselor, teacher, nurturer and supporter to his community and throughout the Upper Kanawha Valley where he was highly known for his wonderful acts of giving.

Freddie was drafted into the United States Armed Forces to fight in WWII. As a US Navy soldier he served as a Stewards Mate 1st Class on the Battle Pacific Ocean Aboard USS LANDER APA-178, and sailed in battle for sixteen and a half months. Freddie served in combat in the Far East, Japan, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Japan, and the Pacific Ocean. During his years of service, he received two 1-B Battle Stars for Okinawa and Iwo Jima, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. He worked in the coal mines for a period of 42 years until retiring from Hawk's Nest Mining Company at the age of 63. Freddie was married to his wife Minnie Davenport for 68 years and they raised eleven children; eight sons, and three daughters, in addition to two grandsons. He took time in flourishing the lives of the children in his community by introducing them to hunting, fishing, and sharing the word of GOD. Freddie frequently provided various forms of counseling in the areas of spiritual, marriage, stress, career, parenting, etc., prayer for the sick, mentoring for all ages, and guidance for many ministers and deacons throughout his community. He was a man of many talents carrying the roles of pastor, community barber, counselor, butcher, electrical power craftsman, mechanic expert, carpenter, and community role model. Having dedicated a major portion of his lifetime to his family, Freddie sacrificed to put each of his eleven children including two grandsons through college with one income, at times using his entire pay check to pay for college fees.

Surviving:wife; Minnie Davenport, brother; John Davenport, Sr., daughters; Delores James (husband the late Andrew James), Mary Fry, sons; Freddie Davenport, Jr (Thelma), Thomas Davenport (Margaret), Larry Davenport (Jennifer), Joseph Davenport (Terri), Paul Davenport (Esther), Timothy Davenport (Tonya), and Jule Davenport; sons/grandsons; Stephen Davenport, and Robert Davenport, 33 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives.

The Celebration of his life will be held Saturday, January 13th, 2018 at Brookside Ministries COGIC, located at 18419 Deepwater Mountain Road, Mount Carbon, WV. with Rev. R. D. Morton and Bishop J. L. Davenport officiating. Public viewing will be from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. The funeral service will start at 1:00 PM.
