Obituary for Anthony J. "Toney" White

Anthony J. “Toney” White, 86, passed away Wednesday morning August 9th, after a brief illness. He was born on March 9, 1931, the son of the late Joseph White and Maria Lobashi. Toney was the tenth child in a family of fourteen.

He graduated from Gauley Bridge High School and West Virginia Tech where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He worked for Union Carbide at Alloy until entering the Marine Corps, serving in the Korean War.

Toney lived his entire life in Boomer. Last fall, he moved to Sweet Briar Assisted Living in Dunbar where he was closer to his older brother, “Tete”. He retired from the WV Department of Highways-State Road Commission in 1994 with 32 years of service. He was a familiar face at the Charleston YMCA where he loved lifting weights and swimming. He was a life-long member of St. Anthony’s Shrine where he faithfully served as an usher for Sunday masses. He enjoyed calling Bingo games for the weekly Lunch Bunch gatherings and was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving brothers include Amelio J. “Tete” White of Dunbar, William C. White (Dosha) of Boomer; sisters, Veola Grounds of Montgomery, Angelina Mullins of Winfield, Sister Nancy White of Morgantown and Sister-In-Laws Ruth White of Cedar Grove and Betty White of Fayetteville. He was a beloved brother and special uncle to all of his 36 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Brothers, John, Mike, Lawrence and Fred; and Sisters, Elizabeth, Anna, Vickie and Theresa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony's Shrine Catholic Church with Fr. Biju Devassy as celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.

The family will receive friends at O’Dell Funeral Home in Montgomery from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Friday where a Christian Prayer service will be held at 8:30 PM. Expressions of sympathy may be sent at www.odellfuneralhome.com
