Henrietta  Rowan  Martin
Henrietta Rowan Martin, 86, returned to her heavenly home on July 12, 2017 after a valiant battle with a long illness. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace. The family wishes to deeply thank the staff of Highland Oaks and their hospice program in McConnelsville, OH for the many years of love and caring for Henrietta.
Henrietta was born to the late Henry and Sarah Jane Rowan, in Berwind, WV on September 5, 1930. She was immersed in the Catholic faith that would be her lifelong support from an early age. She was a devoted Catholic who held various church positions including Lecter and Eucharistic minister. She shared her faith with and touched the lives of countless individuals through groups including CCD, RCIA, RCIC, TEC, Cursillo and Camp Billo. She graduated from Montgomery High School in 1947 and the WV Institute of Technology in 1951 with a degree in teaching and taught for more than 40 years in Boone, Fayette and Kanawha counties.Henrietta ("Aunt Tiny") was blessed with a large and loving family. She was married to Walter Martin. She raised five children with love, patience and guidance. She shared her Catholic faith with her children and encouraged them to be active in the church.
Henrietta was a gifted educator at heart. She was kind and soft-spoken but showed her strength and fire when the need arose. She had many passions in life including her Lord and church, family, traveling with her brother Kevin and her beloved sister-in-law Nancy, teaching, walking, dancing, collecting angels, ice cream and fast cars. She is dearly missed by her loved ones, who celebrate the fact that she is at peace with her creator.
Henrietta is survived by her sons Doug, Drew of Montgomery, WV and Alan (Marina) of South Charleston, WV; her daughter Andrea Tucker (Okey) of Vienna, WV; beloved daughter- in-law Janie Landon of St. Pete, FL; grandchildren Jess (Amelia), Alex (Katie), Clay, Claire (Sam), Sarah (Scott), Okey Glen, Jama (Zach), Jenna, Megan (Phil), Chase, Nathan (Tiffany), Brooke (Jesse); great grandchildren Brayden and Mason, Madison, Lucy and Charlie, Cole and a large extended family. She is preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter Sarah Josephine, beloved son Vincent, brother Kevin and his wife Nancy Bell Rowan and sisters Mary Smith and Freda Fish.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:00 Noon on Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montgomery with Fr. Leon Alexander as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Montgomery Memorial Park at London. Friends may call two hours prior to service at the church on Saturday. A reception to celebrate her life will be at the church follow the burial.
