Obituary for Victor Young

Victor C. Young passed away peacefully in his home on 13 April 2011 at 8:25pm with his wife of 47 years, Rita, by his side. Dr. Young died after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Rita K. Young; his son Dr. James C. Young, CDR, USN; his daughter-in-law Maria L. Young; his grandson James C. “Wooty” Young, Jr.; and his brothers David and Johnny. Dr. Young was born in Shanghai, China on 27 July 1930. He escaped the communist takeover of China and moved to Taiwan after surviving WWII. This made him a lifelong advocate of democracy, freedom, and our Constitution. With freedom and liberty in his heart, Victor immigrated to the United States where he enrolled at NYU and then obtained a MS from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in June 1965. It was at Vanderbilt where he met his future wife Rita Kung and married her on D-Day 6 June 1964. They had a son James C. Young the subsequent year. Mr. Young came to work for WVIT in 1967 as the Assistant Director of the Library. In 1969 he was made Director and Professor of Library Sciences and served WVU Tech until he retired in 1999. During his tenure, the Library moved to its current building, became a federal depository and was automated in a joint venture with Virginia Tech. Dr. Young also initiated an international intern program at The Vining Library and held appointments at fourteen universities in China.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at O’Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery with Carl Harris as service leader and Dr. James C. Young as eulogist . A reception will be held after the service at the funeral home where the family will receive and visit with friends.
